Bruxism is a technical term used to describe the chronic condition of grinding your teeth at night. The unnatural pressure exerted on the biting edge of your teeth can eventually cause minor fractures in the tooth enamel. This could cause discomfort or heightened sensitivity in the tooth. Even if you don’t experience physical distress in the tooth, the compromised enamel could eventually come to foster a new area of tooth decay to form.
Sometimes a minor chip can be repaired, by having our dentist apply a filling at our Rochelle Park, New Jersey practice. If the chip is large or in an important location on the tooth, she might advocate replacing the entire tooth enamel layer with a crown.
To do this, one of our dentists, Dr. Galina Zhukova, Dr. Sarah Mourad, or Dr. Julia Ringler, will numb the area with Novocain before removing the entire enamel layer of the tooth. This leaves behind a post-like abutment that encases the healthy pulp of the tooth. Next, our dentist will create a detailed impression of the area. This will be sent to a professional dental lab to guide them in the creation of your permanent crown. A temporary crown will then be placed over the abutment to protect it.
A member of our staff will call you to schedule a brief second appointment when your new crown is ready. The temporary crown is removed and your permanent crown will be cemented atop the abutment. If you live in the Rochelle Park, New Jersey area and you have a tooth that’s suffered a chip or fracture, we invite you to call 201-518-9795 and have it repaired.
